Yarn Along

A post for knitting and reading - near perfection :)  Join Ginny at small things to share yours and get some inspiration.

I'm nearing the finish on my second Baby Surprise Jacket.  Granted, I still need to sew the seams and buttons on the first but my excuse is waiting to do something about this computer so I can watch some YouTubes to make sure I'm doing it right... or at least well.  Hopefully that will be dealt with tomorrow so this weekend should be the big finish!

For reading I've got Dr Montessori's Own Handbook and Signs of Life going.  I'm not too impressed with the Montessori but I'm willing to imagine that's because it's a very short overview of her methods and also almost 100 years old so many of her ideas have been incorporated in some way into early childhood advice and education.  I also am not sure it would be a good fit for my boys - what I've read so far is not nearly active enough for them.  But I do want to try to work on her "lesson of silence" - what isn't appealing about a few moments of quiet?  :)

Signs of Life I'm finding more enjoyable than other Scott Hahn books I've read.  I think because it is broken into very short sections, only a few pages each, each dealing with a fairly broad variety of topics.  I can't put my finger on what I don't care as much for in Hahn's writing but I'm thinking it might be that he is just too descriptive (is that even possible?)  While it works in a lecture setting I'm not such a fan of it in writing I guess.

Your second BSJ is looking good!

I am also reading (skimming, really) Montessori's Handbook this week. I was hoping to find this more practical than the other Montessori texts I've read, and while it is, I was left with much the same feeling you describe. Some good things to take away, but I'll not be using it wholesale.
