{pretty, happy, funny, real}

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~

Every Thursday at Like Mother, Like Daughter!

{pretty}
We had a nice celebration for Martinmas on Sunday.  The spice cake was yummy, the "lanterns" were lovely.  We did not go on a lantern walk though.  It would have been nice but it was rainy and the thought of giving the boys glass jars with even a tiny flame inside just did not seem like a good idea.  Maybe next year.
My pretty success is that I managed to tidy a small space in my bedroom.  Nothing much, not even picture worthy (yet.)  But it's something I've been meaning to get to and it means that now there is a nice spot, free of clutter and mess, to rest my eyes in there.

{happy}
It makes this mama so happy to see the boys so caring with their baby sister.
And more happy success - according to the scale this morning I am within 1 pound of my pre-pregnancy weight!  And Baby Girl has doubled her birth weight!

{funny}
Quite the chocolate milk mustache, isn't it?
This is more Smallest's success but I'll count it anyway - she's trying to roll, back to belly.  No, she doesn't yet roll belly to back which is part of what's funny.  The other funny bit is that for now (unless she has something to grab and pull herself over) she just spins herself around in a clockwise circle.

{real}
The Smallest sleeps better than her brothers but at the same time not.  Yesterday she woke up way too early from her nap and I brought her out and put her on the floor.  While I went to pour a cup of tea she fell asleep again right there on the floor.  Luckily the WeatherMan was home and took the boys out to the park to play so they wouldn't wake her up.  That's some success - she fell asleep on her own and some me time for Mama.
But the worse part is that she wakes up anywhere between right away and almost an hour after being put down for the night... until I go to bed and take her with me.  While I love the snuggles (when she isn't too fussy) the lack of evening is getting old.  I'm hopeful there will be a success in this area by next week.

{pretty, happy, funny, real}

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~

Every Thursday at Like Mother, Like Daughter!

I really, really wanted to take up Leila's challenge this week and create at least one tidy, pretty, and useful spot in my bedroom.  Making the most of life in the here and now and loving it are things I struggle with (and actually a couple of the reasons I have for blogging.)  But right now the here and now consists of boys getting up at 5:30, a teething baby who (when she does sleep) sleeps in my bedroom, never ending piles of dishes thanks to hourly requests for food from those early risers, that smell of spit up that you just can't seem to get out of your nose although that might be because you've got some on your shoulder and/or on your socks (don't ask, she's got skillz this little one does,) and a laundry basket containing a pile of wash taller than my younger son.  And so the here and now of my bedroom may or may not resemble a storage unit with a bed and crib which are usually clear.  Usually.  So for now that has to wait.  Because there is no way I can post pictures of my storage unit bedroom on the interwebz.  Even if my bed in (nearly) always made.  SO, on to a very typical {p,h,f,r} and back to writing my Small Successes (now at Catholic Mom) because I very much need to take note of the things that are getting done, no matter how small.  (Like that usually made bed - success!)

{pretty}
Pretty sleeping baby - just look at that squishy cheek!  (Adorable baby - success!  Sleeping baby - success!)

{happy}
Happy boys rolling in the leaves.  (Fresh air, exercise - success!  Out with Daddy while Mama takes a tiny moment to herself - success!)

{funny}
Baby burrito watching election coverage with Daddy.  And she did doze off there for a minute or two.  Also funny is that once I got her to bed (with me, of course) she pooped loud enough to wake me up at 2am.  And this time I stayed awake long enough to go change her (success!)  There was a night recently where I heard it and thought to myself  "Must get up and change..." before drifting back to sleep.  Don't worry, that one turned out to have been more like a really big fart with a tiny poop attached.  ;-)

{real}
And although my messy room is as real as it gets, here is something interesting.  See those Smarties?  You might be confused as to which ones - as Americans in Canada (not nearly as romantic as An American in Paris but here we are) they both are.  The top candy are an M&M like chocolate but with a thicker candy shell (so they're crunchier than M&Ms and I don't think they're as chocolate-y.)
 The bottom are Smarties to us but Rockets to everyone around us.  Funny, huh?  And we also insist on calling donut holes Munchkins (not Tim Bits) and the letter Z is not zed (except when Bigger is trying to push Daddy's buttons.)

And for the success - I haven't eaten any of these candies!  I've eaten some of the fruity Halloween candies but nothing else, thanks to a little lady who gets a very angry tummy if Mama eats anything dairy.  So I made vegan brownies for myself (success?)

Small Successes

It's been a while since I shared my itty bitty successes but I need to start getting into it again.  Helps me remember that I am getting stuff accomplished and it motivates me to accomplish stuff :)  So to join Sherry here's what I did this week -

1. I tried a new recipe which included a new technique this week.  And it came out pretty well.  It's apple-cinnamon baked oatmeal and includes soaked oats and nuts.  I think when I make it again it needs more and/or bigger pieces of apple.  And maybe more cinnamon.  I found it almost a little bland.  But everyone liked it so it's a keeper.

2. We got the new bookcase set up so we could put out the picture books :)  I have been having major guild over our book collection because most of it has been sitting in boxes and therefore not being enjoyed as it should be due to space limitations.  But now it's out.  At least what of it is here, there are still two boxes at my parents house waiting for us to bring them back on our next visit.  I'm so excited to have it set up finally.  They're alphabetize by author, except for a few "special collections" - holiday books, collections (poetry, Mother Goose, etc.), books about Maine, stuff like that.  Yes, we have a collection of books about Maine - the WeatherMan has a cousin in Maine who sends beautiful books for the boys every year for Christmas.  I am loving this new organization and can't wait to get the rest of the books in.  Good heavens, did I really just say I want to bring more stuff in here?  There must be something wrong with me ;-)

3. Both boys napped today.  At.The.Same.Time.  It's a major miracle.  Alright, so it's not really my accomplishment but I set it all in motion right?  Got them settled and whatnot, right?  Hey, I'll take what I can get :)

Small Successes

What, in this oh great week of the to do list, have I gotten accomplished.  Well I can tell you that since our Thanksgiving dinner guests canceled on us (we were going to host the bachelor Americans from the WeatherMan's work) I didn't get the bathroom cleaned.  Or the living room decluttered.  Or the kitchen moped.  But there must have been other things done.  :)

I did the bulk of my Christmas shopping - this morning in my jammies.  Now just a few little odds and ends to add in and the things I'm making to finish.

I'm making a second pot of broth from our Thanksgiving turkey.  We have a small stock pot so I thought I'd be able to get a second batch out of it.

I took a rational approach to the boys' sleeping.  I know that sounds crazy but it worked, last night at least.  I told them several times yesterday that they were going to sleep in their own beds that night and were going to stay there till Mama came to get them.  If they woke up and came to get into bed with Mama she would be taking them back to their own beds and tucking them back in.  Well, when Bigger turned up at 3:30 he walked back to bed with no objections and only a request for water (that I don't think he even drank.)  When Littler turned up at 5 I figured we could have a snuggle since there was probably not chance of getting him back to sleep at the point and wasn't going to spend the next hour fighting with him.  So I got an almost decent night's sleep last night :)  I wonder if it will work again tonight...

Now I'm off to Sherry's to check in and see what else is being celebrated this week :)

Small Successes

Well, this week I've:

*finished reading a couple books and finished a couple knit projects
*finally tried the recipe for chocolate pudding from the Deceptively Delicious cookbook - YUM!
*I measured furniture and space to find a new way to arrange things, hopefully to make us more comfortable (and maybe so I can get some more sewing done.)
*I got a start on weeding out the boys' outgrown clothes... now to finish and get the next sizes up into the drawers.

Head on over to Sherry's blog Chocolate for your Brain to share your little victories :)

Small Successes

Each week I really like this chance to look at what I've been doing (or not doing) and take stock of my successes.  Otherwise all I would see are the piles of dishes, laundry, and dirt.  And checking in with Sherry helps me celebrate my wins and everyone else who posts theirs.  Good times.

This week my main accomplishment is that I am awake.  I have been working at helping Littler sleep more.  I tend to be so tired that it is so much  easier to just bring him to bed with me when he wakes up and, surprise surprise, next thing I know he's nursing half the night.  And wakes up earlier and earlier each night.  Something had to be done.

So starting Monday morning when he woke I went to him but wouldn't pick him up.  That morning he screamed and shrieked at my from 4 to 5:30am.  At that point I left the room, counted to 10, came back in, and turned on the light saying "good morning!"  So that was the start of my day.  Tuesday morning he was up again at 4 but settled down, as long as I was rubbing his back.  That worked till a little after 5 - so I repeated Monday's lights on routine.  Wednesday he settled long enough after three tries for me to go back to bed for about 45 minutes.

This morning it only took a couple minutes to settle him and he slept for two more 45 minute naps.  But I had already been up a bazillion times with the Bigger One - half of which he was just kinda wandering around the apartment!  The other half he was pestering "mama, I'm hungry!"  So I ended up having to get up and cut him a piece of cheese.  And if you give a kid a piece of cheese in the middle of the night, he'll need a cup of water.  And then after he gets back into your bed, he'll need a refill.  I was too tired to worry about the both of us waking up wet and thankfully that wasn't an issue.

Once they were both up to stay (about 6:20) I woke up DH to be up with them so I could have a chance to catch up a little of that sleep I've been sacrificing.  Well, a little after 7 the phone rang and he was called into work :(  I am so tired and I had so much to get done today that now can't either due to lack of car or "help" of boys.  I am so frustrated.  But here we are.  Slogging along, keeping everyone fed and kinda clean.  And I am planning on taking the boys either to McD's or the mall food court for dinner (oh, the horror!) just so I don't have to cook or clean it up.  The WeatherMan can fend for himself when he gets home - and he better wash his own dishes ;-)

Small Successes

Here we are again, looking for and celebrating our accomplishments.  Head over the Chocolate for your Brain if you want to share yours :)

*Last night no dirty dishes were left in the sink over night.  And no, they weren't just sitting on the counter, smarty pants.  Can't make any such promise for tonight but the night is still (sorta) young.

*Monday when I made brownies I only eat two!  Usually it's more like half the pan.

*Still plugging away on my posture, attitude, vitamins, oral hygiene, and hydration.  Getting pretty good too - haven't missed a vitamin or flossing all week :)  I think this week I'll work on my prayer life.

*I developed a new do-to list system for myself.  It's maybe overkill but I'm getting quite a bit done and feeling good about it.  My list has 3 columns - boys, household, me.  I haven't crossed everything off yet but, really, I don't ever expect to.

*And when the bottle of chocolate syrup leaked all over the inside door of the fridge, even though it's being replaced by the management company tomorrow, I still cleaned it all up.  But it was so tempting to just leave it and let it get thrown out like that in the morning.

Small Successes

Still plugging along.  Some days I feel like a spacey blue fish from a favorite animated movie - "just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."  Which is why I like stopping once a week to take stock of what is getting done.  Or at least getting worked on.

*Still working on last week's posture and attitude changes.  I hope I'm making progress.

*I've added to that list a few other habits that are for some reason a lot harder than they should be - drinking water, taking my vitamins, flossing.  Maybe this will be the week I add some crunches in there too, that would be good.

*The dishes are done, laundry is put away, menu is planned to the end of the month, boys are napping.  Occasionally the stars do align.

*Survived a very soggy pumpkin patch this morning.  Bigger nearly got sucked into the muck and I had to climb in to pull him back out.  He feel apart after that saying he wanted to go home yet as soon as his feet were back on the ground he headed straight back for the mud.  And both boys fell asleep on the way home and have been napping for 2 hours - score!  Now I just wait to wait till all the mud on my books dries so I can try to get them clean.  And start looking for big Mama rubber boots.  (At least they're trendy so they wont be tough to get.)

Small Successes

Oh, the little things.  There are so many that are accomplished in a week yet so few are recognized.  So here is the chance.  You can check in with Sherry at Chocolate for your Brain to see more small successes and share yours.  :)

*I'm working on my posture.  Trying to keep my shoulders back and my back straight.  It looks better and feels better.  Or so I keep telling myself.

*I'm also working on not complaining.  I guess I should be really honest and say I'm working on an attitude adjustment but that seems kinda harsh.  That's why I started out blogging and I really need to do more to find my moments of peace, happiness wherever I can find it, and recognize just how much there is to be thankful for all the time.

* I finished a quilt :)

*I have a ridiculous number of good intensions for when we get back home.  Does that count as a success?  Maybe it's just crazy wishful thinking...

Small Successes

What have we accomplished this week?  Often a tough question because sometimes just surviving doesn't seem like much but really that takes a lot.  And that's why we blog on Thursdays - to take stock of all those little things that otherwise are overlooked.

*I trimmed the Little Guy's nails.  And they need it again.  As do the Bigger One's.

*I did my duty day at preschool this week and survived the fire alarm going off (more than once) and several screaming 3 year olds (not fire alarm related.)  Actually duty days are a good time.  :)

*I had a good time playing with some digital scrapbooking software and wrote up a review for it.  And have my first giveaway going on!  Go ahead and check it out :)  I feel kinda funny giving a plug to something, I never really liked the thought of being a giant walking ad for clothing companies for example.  But that's what reviews are for.

Phase Two

Of that big scary project.  It's done.  Yup, I had an interview Thursday.  Can't say it was a resounding success.  I suppose only a job offer would prove that.  But I didn't throw up or pass out or manage to offend anyone too badly.  Other than when I slipped and referred to the students as "kids" - I'm guessing I got docked some points on that.

All a pretty impressive feat considering I walked into a room with a committee of SEVEN for this interview.  And I would bet they were limited to seven because the dining room table of the Newman House only seats 8.  I totally get the need to have a big group - we're talking two colleges, one parish, and the diocese all needing to be represented.  That's a lot of very varied interests.  It was just incredibly intimidating.  Really, big bad scary intimidating.

You know when you have an end of year exam and it covers the whole course.  There really isn't a lot of studying you can do because there is so much that could be covered on the exam but only a little actually will.  And anyway you were there for all the classes so it's all familiar and there in your memory.  So you do some review and call it good and go to the exam.  In the end you walk out feeling dumber than when you walked in.  Then when you get your grade back you could have flunked it or aced it or anything in between, any outcome is as likely as the others.  That's just how the interview felt.

My stomach is still doing flip flops over this two days later.  Hardcore flip flops that might be described as butterflies but only if you've ever seen a 500 pound gorilla with wings.  I keep replaying bits in my head and saying to myself "why did I do that?" or "why didn't I say this?"  But what's done is done.  All that's left to do now is wait and see.  It's in the hands of the Spirit.  And of course the committee.

And even thought my right calf is still sore from tightening it through the entire 30 minutes I was there (to keep the rest of me from wiggling around too much, I'm an anxious fidgeter) I am counting this as my small success for the week.  Because like I said I didn't barf or fall or belch or take my toys and go home, as tempting as that was.  I survived my first proper professional interview.  And I think if this doesn't work out I will just stay an at home mom until someone offers me a job.  ;-)

Small Successes

Today I'm not feeling successful.  I'm tired and achy from Littler and his unhappy tummy last night.  Being thrown up on, cleaning it up, and calming down a freaking out two year old can really take it out of you.  Then getting up during the night to settle him too has just left me wiped out.  So I am taking that as my excuse for being lazy taking it easy today.  But the point of this post is not to dwell on what isn't getting done (dishes, pukey laundry, research...) but to find what has been done, so here goes.

*I finished up some odds and ends of projects, like sewing the seams on a knitted swiffer cover.

*I figured out that I really and truly need to give up junk food again.  I will admit that I have gained back what weight I lost in the spring when I gave it up before and I am just not happy with my current state of lumpiness (although the boys are fascinated and love to give pokes to my flub belly.)
And I also figured out that now has to be the time because with my efforts to keep Littler in his own bed at night he is not nursing nearly as much as he was.  And therefore my caloric needs are not what they were, yet I have made no adjustment to my eating.  So I really need to get on that.  So I'm telling the interwebz that I am again going junk food free in hopes that I can find some accountability here.

*That being said, I just put a pan of brownies in the oven.  And will be packing half of it to go to work with the WeatherMan tonight.
(For my definition of "junk food" I am currently limiting it to prepackaged junk, if it's made at home with real ingredients I'll allow it.  Provided I can refrain from eating the entire pan in an afternoon.)

Small Successes

This week I've:

*done quite a bit of (light and fluffy) reading and knitting

*kept Littler in his crib every night until after 5am.  I think we're at 9 nights now.  The sleep deprivation from a string of bad sleeping and early waking is wearing me down but I'm keeping strong.  And keeping right on him when he's awake in the crib so he doesn't try to climb out again.

*wrote about my big sorta scary project.  I wrote here last week that it was finished and now I've gone public.

*gotten back into a writing groove, as you can probably tell from my linkies here :)  It's nice to be telling more stories again.  Like about salvaging Littler's birthday cake.  That was a success in itself, never mind posting about it.

Small Successes

Each week it's good to take stock of accomplishments.  They may not seem like much but the least we can do is small things with great love.  Head over to see what else is being celebrated with Sherry at Chocolate for your Brain.

*I finished my latest BSJ.  Just need to sew seams and buttons.  :)

*I finished that big-bad-scary project.  Time will only tell if there are further phases to said project but for now it is an accomplishment.  I'll write about it soon I think.

*I have kept Littler in bed all night for the last 2 nights.  His bed.  We are breaking the wake-during-the-night-get-brought-to-bed-with-Mama-and-eventually-wear-her-down-so-she'll-nurse-me cycle.  The goal is to get him SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT!  Mama is tired, which is what leads to the co- sleeping.  And that has been leading to Mama being pummeled half the night.  And that is no fun.  Neither is making him stay in bed but last night was better than the night before so there is progress.

Small Successes

So, have I done anything this week?  That's a toughie.  At the moment it feels like no because there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth going on over bedtime.  Not just now but every.single.night.  But here's a sucess
      *we've found a method that gets a nap out of both boys helps the boys get an afternoon nap.  Of course now that I've written that out loud, so to speak, I'm sure it wont work again.  But it's been nice while it's lasted.

      *at the moment I am caught up on both dishes and laundry.  I'm not sure how that little miracle happened but again, enjoying it while I've got it.

     *still giving up soda and trying to get rid of junk food too.  Granted, I am far from perfect and I have had 3 Cokes in the last week but for me that is (sadly) improvement.  I even worked out this morning :)  And yet again, not sure this is all gonna last but while it does it's a good thing.

Small Successes

This week I have:
*given up soda.  It's only been, umm, 4 days but it's a very good start.

*finished my mom's scarf and my first hat.  Scarf is very nice, only a couple places where I miss counted my rows and have cables either too short or too long but it's still lovely.  Hat is adorable, in the tiny-doesn't-fit-a-real-person's-head kind of way but it's nicely knitted and at least I learned how to knit a hat.

*learned that gage in knitting can be important.

*mopped the dining room and kitchen.  It was l-o-n-g over due.  As in there was something spilled on the floor for some reason near my spot at the table that when I tried to step back off it I think I lost some of the skin from the bottom of my foot.  I can't believe I just admitted to that on the interwebz.  Sadly the mop broke before I could do the bathroom but that is not nearly so nasty.  Lame dollar store swiffer rip off mop heads.

See, each and every one a victory.  They might be small but all those little things do add up, just like the calories in each M&M.  Interestingly, they taste different here in Canada.  So does a good ol' Hershey's bar...  :-/  Not quite so good ol'.  Anyway, head over to Sherry's to check in with your small but major successes :)

Small Successes

FaithButton
Sherry at Chocolate for your Brain hosts this chance to share the small successes in our week.  Some weeks it's a major chore to come up with anything and some weeks are just productive on their own.  So this week I have:

*made a blueberry pie with my mom and my boys.  Oh so yummy!

*cleaned out stuff stored at my parents' house and took 2 boxes and a trash bag full of stuff over to the Hospice Thrift Shop :)

*found my Anne of Green Gables books and am looking forward to reading them again
*helped my mom clean out her closet and the linen closet and took another 4 trash bags and a garment bag over to Hospice :)

*got a hair cut :)
I'm happier with the cut than the expression suggests - I was in the middle of a conversation while trying to get a pic for the blog.  Maybe I'm easily distracted but I guess it sounds better to say I'm a multi-tasker.  ;-)

Small Successes

FaithButton
It can be tough to remember that all those little successes in our days add up, those things that don't go quite so well tend to be over powering.  But here is a place to look for and celebrate those little things accomplished.  Check in with Sherry at Chocolate for your Brain to share yours :)

*I'm still holding out on online shopping :)  I might place an order after we get there since there will still be time for it to arrive before we leave to come home but so far I'm keeping strong.

*I finished the quilt top I'm working on and am resolved to be more "process" than "product" oriented when I get back to quilting it.  And with my other projects too.

*I bit my tongue yesterday as we came home and passed the "workers" leaving our building for the night.  They were doing the annual fire alarm inspection which apparently involves checking that each apartment's alarm is working by opening the apartment and sounding the alarm FOR.THE.ENTIRE.BUILDING!!!!!  So yes, that ear splitting industrial fire alarm went off... and went off... and went off all afternoon.  And echoed through our cinder block apartment.  Every time it went off the boys flipped out - shrieking, sobbing, running to me and throwing themselves all over me.  They even did this when we went outside to figure out what to do for the rest of the day while this continued.  Because after 2 hours they had almost completed 2 floors of the building.  Only five to go.  Outside we talked to a neighbor whose poor dog was so freaked out by the noise he was trying to jump off the balcony!  Luckily she has a friend nearby who took in Matt so he could get some quiet.  But the best part?  They have to finish today.  Oh goody.  :-/  There has got to be a better way and I will be complaining loudly to the management of our building because this far surpasses "inconvenience."

*I stayed up way too late last night resorting and purging the bins of baby clothes to take to store in my parents' attic.  Brought 5 bins down to 4 (and filled the fifth with "other baby stuff" like a shopping cart cover, waterproof pads, little toys, and outgrown shoes.)  And I have an overflowing diaper box of clothes to go to Value Village later today :)

Small Successes

FaithButton
I like looking over my week and trying to come up with something that's done  realizing how much I've accomplished.  Because even the little things count.  :)  Share yours with Sherry at Chocolate for your Brain.
This week I've:

*really finished making the blocks for the first wedding present I'm working on.  I thought I had it done but when I laid it all out it was too small.  A snuggly lap blanket is fine but this is for newlyweds - it should be enough to cover two laps.  So luckily I had ordered way more fabric for the backing than I would ever need (because I may not remember to "measure twice and cut once" but I sure think ahead to be sure there will be enough for the big bits) and had three squares left from the blocks I had made.  I cut enough squares to make 12 more blocks (the math will make sense when I can some day show the quilt, but not till after the bride-to-be has it) and today I sewed and pressed and ripped out seams and sewed some more.  :)  Now I'm ready to assemble to top.
And I have a delusional hope of finishing the top and quilting to be able to do the binding in the car on our way to vacation next week...  Yup, this mama is a little crazy :)

*been following the days outlined in Organized Simplicity.  More or less.  Usually more less than more.  But even my half-hearted attempts seem to be making some progress in getting things into order.  The living room is fairly tidy - it will always be a losing battle to the toys but other than that it's better.  And the kitchen feels so much better :)  How long can I keep it up, who knows.  But just changing up my routines and making some headway makes me feel better.
And it will be even better after our vacation when we dump a bunch of stuff  take some boxes to store in the attic at my parents' house :)

*restrained myself from much online shopping for our upcoming vacation.  I usually do all my ordering before we travel so we can have it shipped to my parents' house.  But I'm working at being good and not doing too much.  Of course there are a few things we need, like some extra fabric for the second quilt I need to work on.  And it helps that I know there are three boxes of books waiting for me  the boys all us book hoarders.  :)  I mean book lovers ;-)

Small Successes

FaithButton
Thursday is time for celebrating all those little things that are done in a week that may not seem like much but are successes.

*this morning I clipped the boys finger and toe nails without major incident.  That's a first :)

*today I managed to motivate myself in spite of serious crankiness, of the no nap and cutting a molar variety, and got out to run some errands.  Only got half of what I set out for but we were out of the house and we got milk and that's a success in my world.

*I finished the quilt blocks for the first wedding gift I need to finish.  I'm hoping to finish the top tomorrow because hope springs eternal.

*I worked out once this week.  :)  Not at all as much as I would like but better than nothing which is what I had been doing.

*the spell checker did not find any misspellings just now when I checked this post :)

And there you have it.  Some weeks are just getting by weeks.  And some seasons are full of just getting by weeks ;-)
