Yarn Along

I love reading and knitting.  There isn't nearly enough time in my days for as much as I would like.  Probably partly because every Wednesday I check out what everyone is reading and knitting with Ginny at small things.  But I still love it and I enjoy sharing :)

I am breaking a rule I tried to set for myself to keep my life more simple - to read one book at a time.  Umm, yeah, I've got three going and one just retrieved from the library today.  Opps :)  I'm still working my way through Organized Simplicity.  I'm attempted what my mom always recommends: take what you can use and leave the rest.  She has a lot of good ideas and things to consider.  And I want a more simple, peaceful home so it's worth working on.

Next is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in preparation for seeing the last movie.  Granted, that might just upset me when I see what changes they've made in making the movie.  But I'm really looking forward to seeing it all the same.  I'm also in the middle of The Amish Way by Donald B. Kraybill, Steven M. Nolt, and David L. Weaver-Zercher.  It is subtitled "Patient Faith in a Perilous World" which is again something I need to be working on and I'm hoping to get some inspiration from it.  The authors go through the various "oddities" of Amish life and culture to make them understandable.  It's really interesting, although I think I've picked a lot of it up from reading Beverly Lewis novels.  But they do go more into the details of Amish faith and why it has such a visible impact on their lives.  Lastly, I just picked up The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers from the library.  Because everyone knows, if mama ain't happy... ;-)  I'm hoping to get one of the others finished before cracking into it but depends on timing since I have so many library books going at the moment.

And then there's mom's scarf.  I'm more than halfway done.  I figured that each skein gives me about 14 cables and I've been averaging 2 cables a day.  So that means I'll finish in... 2 weeks.  :-/  I think I need to step it up a bit.  I never understand in people's ravelry notes how they manage to knit whole scarves in a matter of days.  For me it tends to be months.  I'm thinking my next project needs have more variety in the pattern because if I start right into my dad's scarf I might not ever be able to finish it.  Not to say I don't love the pattern and the yarn I'm working with - I do!  And I love the recipient and occasion very much too :)  I think it's just the tediousness of scarf knitting.

So, what are you knitting and reading?

Scarves are fairly repetitive so I think that translates to really fast knitting for some and really slow knitting for others. I'm a fairly fast knitter, but not very fast with cables yet.

The thing that kills me is seeing how some people whip out a really awesome lace shawl in like 6 days...

You know I have tried to read more than one book at a time and I just feel guilty reading one and knowing another is there waiting! Before you know it you will be done with that scarf. I wish I was half way done with mine.

The scarf looks great! Love the cables.

I've heard the movie is close to the book...but I haven't seen the movie. Hope you aren't disappointed. My sister who is an HP fanatic loved it!

Your books all sound great - it's ok to read more than one in that case! ;)

I'm reading "Friday Night Lights" and "Boys Should be Boys." Unfortunately, I do not knit.

Saw HP yesterday and loved it! There are some changes from the book, but nothing that ruined it for me. Hope you get to see it soon. I love the scarf. Maybe one day I will be brave enough to try cables.

Lovely scarf!
I was knitting a sweater for my husband once and I figured out that it took me an hour to knit one inch of the front.
After that, I tried not to think about how much time it really takes to knit :)
