{pretty, happy, funny, real} - sleeping baby edition

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~

Every Thursday at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
{pretty}
Beautiful dreamer.

{happy}
Sleeping baby = happy mama.

{funny}
I love this pose.

{real}
Mama, please quit it with the pictures of me sleeping!
Because we really do take a lot of pictures of our babies sleeping.  Because it really was such a big deal when the first one slept.  Because he really wouldn't let me put him down to sleep for at least the first 7 weeks of his life.  Really, I slept sitting upright on the couch with him all that time.  And really, Baby3.0 is an amazing sleeper (by comparison anyway.)

Yarn Along

Yup, I was the crazy lady with her knitting basket in the hospital.   I still needed to sew buttons.  The WeatherMan didn't really know what I needed out of it so he brought me the whole basket.  And the boys wanted to help, of course.

 Here she is, ready to go home.  We'll try again with something less bulky and I hope we can get a better picture.  Oh, and the booties?  Just fit her long, skinny feet.  And don't stay on at all.  I'll have to play with the straps to see if I can make a better fit.

I obviously did not finish the puerperium cardi I cast on last week.  (You might recognize the yarn from my great yarn untangle and my first attempt at socks.  I think it's happier like this.)  I didn't have the "required" yarn and needles so I upsized.  Just as well given how hot this summer is but it should fit in the fall.  And it looks like I'll have to buy the bigger pattern - both boys want sweaters too (and I am really loving this pattern, I totally get now why it is so popular.)  I'm also still working on my pretty scarf.  Both projects get a row or two knit here and there, when someone else has a turn with the Smallest or she's asleep on my chest.  Eventually she'll let us put her down when she's sleeping and maybe I can get more done.

My reading is also scattered - all over the living room.  There's the Dr Sears Baby Book at one end of the couch and This Is My Body by Mark P. Shea at the other.  By the chair is Certain Women by Madeleine L'Engle and the Knitpicks and Connecting Threads catalogs.  Sherlock Holmes is in need of charging but still in progress too.  Once we get to a point where I'm not dozing off every other time I'm nursing I'll make more progress.  In the meantime, oh well :)  At least I can type one handed.  And catch up on blogs and Yarn Along.  So now off to link up at small things.  Happy Wednesday :)

{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real} - getting ready for baby

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~

Every Thursday at Like Mother, Like Daughter!

{pretty}
It's beautiful when they happily work on something and I can sit and put my feet up.

 {happy}
When the WeatherMan isn't on shift he takes the boys at the crack of dawn (before it gets hot or busy) to the park to play.  The boys are happy climbing, digging, having snack, being out.  Mama's happy at home, keeping cool, getting some stuff done, and just getting to put her feet up.

 {funny}
I finally started packing a hospital bag.  Got the essentials - hat, booties, soda, meds, diapers, and Tim's card.  Maybe I should work on that... ;-)

 {real}
This is the only "nursery" space we have.  Pack'n'play isn't set up (it's still in the closet in fact.)  Car seat isn't installed (still in the basement actually.)  Hospital paperwork isn't finished.  Pantry isn't stocked.  But I did get some boxes sorted and moved and I did get this cute little space set up.  I'm a little stressed about it.  But at the same time, meh.  None of that is rocket science.  It'll get done.

Full term!

And so thankful.  I am so uncomfortable.  I was never anywhere near this uncomfortable with either of the boys.  For perspective: I taught dance while I was pregnant with Bigger.  Right up to when I was scheduled for a c-section (39 weeks) otherwise I probably would have kept teaching until I delivered.  In fact I had a huge rehearsal at 38 weeks and danced the whole time, 5 or 6 hours of quick step over the course of a weekend.  That's what I credit with avoiding that scheduled c-section.  (Bigger had decided at 36 weeks that he was no longer interested in just hanging upside down and flipped breach.  And yes, flipped back at 38 weeks.  He has been a real stinker from the very beginning too.)  Now just unpacking and putting baby clothes in the drawer is too much for me.

So I am spending as much time as I can sitting on my butt, with my feet up.  The WeatherMan has been awesome taking the boys out to give me breaks and picking up more slack on the housework.  Because today I tried to catch up some dishes and seriously could only wash about 5 plates and a couple pieces of silverware.  I'm feeling pretty pathetic.  When I'm not feeling sorry for myself for feeling like I'm falling apart.  I am so not used to not being able to be active.  But the end is in sight.  And in the meantime I am trying to just get the rest I need and enjoy the moments of quiet that I am getting.

As for updates, I've gained a total of about 17 pounds so far.  I always find it so hard to eat in heat like this (the "real feels" have been up around 99 again and it's rough.)  I finally started filling out the hospital paperwork and digging out the baby things.  It's amazing how much more laid back one is for the third ;-)  Next up we need to do a little more organization in our room (to make space for the pack'n'play so the poor child will have somewhere to sleep.  If this child will sleep.  Please say a prayer for us that this child will sleep.)  And get out the carseat and install it.  We have a tentitive plan for evicting the kidlet but obviously it's still to early for it to be set in stone.  I wonder if this one will follow in older brothers' footsteps and I'll go into labor the day before I'm scheduled for the induction...

Here's the required belly pic.  It's hard finding shirts that don't let that belly hang out the bottom.  I'm beginning to understand why "back in the day" women went into confinement at the end of pregnancy - for weeks now I've been feeling like a specticle when out and trying to wrangle the boys!

Here is 37 weeks with Bigger.  For having gained way more weight my belly wasn't all that impressive.  I don't remember (because really by the end I just didn't want to know) but I think my total gain was 38lbs.  Oh look, you can just see Pete, our dwarf hamster, back there in his cage.  He was a funny little critter.

And Littler.  I had outgrown all my maternity shirts by 2 months before he was due!  And if I recall I gained up 28lbs with him.  Does that mean I'll top out at 18 and have the biggest belly of the three?  Wouldn't that be funny!

Yarn Along

Warning: there is a level of adorable in this picture that might be disturbing to some viewers.
That wee little bootie can't possibly fit a real foot, could it?  I mean I have two babies but they weren't really that small.  Were they?  I felt the same way opening that first pack of newborn diapers too.
Anyway, since I took the picture last night I moved the buttons closer to the toe of the bootie so that straps would fit better and dealt with all those tails.  This pattern produces an insane number of tails but most of them are useful so that's a plus.  The sweater buttons are waiting to see which side they need to be sewn on (I'll be leaving yarn and a needle out for Fava while we're in the hospital :)
Next up will be the other wee little bootie.  Then a pair of pink and purple to go with the other sweater and if I can get to Michael's before the coupon expires I'll get a set of small double point needles for a pink and/or purple hat too.  With 3(!!!) weeks to go I can totally pull that off.  And cast on a simple something that wont require much brain power for after the kidlet makes an entrance.

As for reading I'm still enjoying Sherlock Holmes.  Did you see there is another new Watson/Holmes show coming out in the fall?  Maybe I'm just overly aware because I'm reading it but it seems like there are a ton of versions coming out right now.  I figured out this week that they'll make good reading while nursing - short installments, language that makes you feel smart, and the nook is ideal for one handed reading :)  And there are still about 1000 pages left between the two volumes I have.
I'm also reading Style, Sex, and Substance edited by Hallie Lord.  A very sweet friend lent it to me and I am really enjoying it.  I'm not very far into it to say much but I could totally have written Hallie Lord's chapter about finding balance between style and modesty (yeah, trying to become invisible through her style -or lack thereof- that was totally me.  And I would still hid in my clothes most of the time if left to my own devices.)  But I can also totally agree with her statement that dressing nicely just feels better.  Schlepy clothes lead to a schlepy attitude.  I can't wait to see what the other contributors have to say on the other topics.

And now I'm off to link up with Ginny.  And check out what else is going on 'round the blogs.  And cast on that other stinkin' cute bootie.  Happy Yarn Along!

32 weeks!

As promised, an updated photo.  Complete with the boys.

And as promised, for comparison.  Roughly 32 weeks along with Bigger.

All is going well.  I'm up 12 pounds total.  There's hardly any bruising from my shots which is awesome.  The kiddlet is still anonymous and still the most mellow of the three.  The boys are fascinated by babies they see when we are out.  And thankfully don't ask every day if the baby is ready yet.  It's gonna be a long not quite 2 months.  Gosh, less than 2 months already?

26 Week Observations

Attempt at belly pic #1.  This is what happens when Mama tries to take a picture.  We must be involved in everything.  Especially if Mama is trying to get something done.  Thanks for the help, boys.

Here's another attempt.  Please don't mind the unmade bed or duct tape on the wall or the undressed children- just another day here in paradise :)  Anyway, I'm officially 26 weeks today according to the "magic wheel o' baby" and thought it was a good time to share some thoughts.  I don't have a lot of pictures of my previous pregnancies but I do have with each boy at 37 weeks.  I'm looking forward to putting all three together and seeing how the bellies stack up.

First of all, I've only actually gained 5lbs so far (after gaining back the few I lost in the first trimester, but I don't like to count those.)  I'm chalking this up to the lingering nausea and the gross taste I get in my mouth.  Both of which are new to me.  Might also have to do with still having a nursling, even though he's down to only three times a day at most.  Whatever it is, excuse me for a moment while I get some crackers and some Coke (my go-to for tummy settling, still.)

Also different this time around is that this child is more mellow.  It's still early in the game and there are still relatively roomy accommodations.  The boys were both ridiculous acrobats from as soon as I could feel them.  This baby, on the other hand, seems quite content to chillax.  And I am good with that.  I could really get used to a happy, content baby.  It would be an adjustment after the boys but I think it would be a pleasant change.  :)  But like I said, it's also still early to get my hopes up.

Perhaps my strangest observation to share is my great sadness at the fact that "Man vs. Food" is no longer being shown every evening at 7.  Anyone who knew me back in my vegetarian days is probably scandalized by this admission.  But truth be told, I haven't been veg in more than 5 years.  During my first pregnancy anything involving soy in any form made me want to ralph.  And the most simple solution - eat chicken.  By the time Bigger was getting into solids I could not handle making three separate meals all the time.  In the last year or so I even added red meat back into my diet.  And now I am craving PROTEIN.  Hardcore.  That made "Man vs. Food" a perfect match yet kinda cruel.  There are a few featured meals that I totally want SOOOOO bad.  In fact, we've made a deal to stop at Dinosaur BBQ next time we pass Syracuse - yay!  And there is a place not too very far (in the grand scheme of things) from where we are that has a ginormous steak topped with not one but TWO kinds of blue cheese and crispy onions.  I'm drooling a little just thinking about it.  But then there are foods like the "goober burger" that make me think I might barf just thinking about.  A burger with a big dollop of peanut butter and a fried egg on it - now that's just nasty.  And it's not just the hormones or my peanut allergy that say so, the WeatherMan agrees.

My only other baby news is that my OB has switched my meds.  I have a genetic mutation that makes me a super-clotter.  Sounds cool to say it like that, doesn't it?  Like I could be in the X-Men.  Really it's called Factor V Leiden and it means I am at higher risk for forming clots.  Which makes pregnancy an even greater risk for clotting.  We learned this (and found out my mom is a mutant too) when I got pregnant with Bigger after my first pregnancy ended in a missed miscarriage at 18 weeks.  It's a long story but I was put on anticoagulants by a perinatologist when I about 22 weeks along with Bigger.  And lucky me, it continues.  I talked to my OB about other options but current medical wisdom is still that meds are the best choice.  But she did change me to a once a day rather than twice.  Which means that this baby is even more likely to receive an early eviction notice which has some things going for it.  And it means the shots will continue till kidlet is 6 weeks.  Oh yeah, I didn't mention that this med is injected.  Yuck :(  The good news is that since the new med is only once a day that cuts the hassle and pain in half.  And I don't seem to be bruising nearly as badly as before.  Thank goodness because the boys are not at all gentle with my ever growing belly and that's where I have to do the shots.

And there you have it.  There really is never a dull moment :)  I'll let you know when we have an exit strategy but it probably wont be till about 35 weeks.

Patience and letting go

The Lord in His infinite Wisdom has decided that I need a big ol' lesson in patience and letting go.  It's going to be a long 20 weeks.

Friday was our 20 week ultrasound.  Baby Squirmy spent the entire time wiggling all over the place.  The poor ultrasound tech chuckled about it a couple times.  I probably should have laid off the cookies that morning but it had been a rough one and those frozen Thin Mints are just so good.

So once she has finally gotten all the images she needs she went and got Daddy and the boys to come see.  She showed us all the highlights - head complete with little nose in profile, bladder (why they always need to show that off I have never understood,) spine, legs, feet, toes, hands, fingers.  It's just amazing.  And at the very end I asked about gender.  And ya know what, that little stinker kept those adorable little thighs together the whole time!  "Nothing to see here, folks."

Now, the WeatherMan is very cool with this.  I had to talk him into finding out with both the boys.  I on the other hand...  I really like starting to get to know the kiddo while we're waiting.  Trying out names, picking a coming home outfit, figuring out sleeping arrangements (oh, who am I kidding, I'm tired and it's only gonna get worse, this kid will be sleeping with me.  Or more likely not sleeping with me if history is any indication.)  I want to know, I want to plan, I want to imagine.  I like that little illusion of control of getting my head wrapped around the person-ness of the critter who is making me have to pee every 20 minutes, making me uncomfortable, and who we'll be spending the next 4-plus months getting ready for and the rest of our lives getting to love.  I'm not really liking this state of anonymous.

Oh well, I still have till July to work my way through it.  Gosh, that's a long way away.  I suppose each child gets to be a unique adventure.  And this kidlet is taking a stand early!
